Yume Nikki
Debatably a game
I couldn't find any blinkies for this one, shockingly. There's some cool gifs though, I might dump those at the end.
I got Yume Nikki with absolutely zero context. It was free on Steam one day, suddenly, and I download pretty much every game I see that's free. Plus, it looked reminiscent of Undertale, and I'm one hell of an Undertale fan.
I couldn't get anywhere in the game without a walkthrough-I didn't know what the goal of the game was, where to go, any of it. As it turns out, that's kind of the point.
The creator of Yume Nikki has been largely absent-but they have stated that Yume Nikki isn't... About Anything. It's barely a game, more like a walking simulator. You walk about from room to room, seeing bizarre, dream-like landscapes. There's other characters, though they actually tend to ignore you-and very rarely are they human. As you explore, you can find effects, kind of like powerups that change the player character-Madotsuki-just slightly, and can allow you into more of the world. But there aren't fights. There's hardly dialogue. And there isn't supposed to be a story.

It's chalk full of references, the Wheatley is absolutely brilliant, all of the cores are wonderful, the bits with Cave Johnson and Caroline are inspired. It's great. GlaDos is an icon and sings a parody of Poor Unfortunate Souls. Doug Rattman's there! Briefly, sure, but he's there!
